The Barossa Valley, the heartland of Australian wine for nearly two centuries, has a rich history of spirits distillation, a fact often forgotten.
Barossa Distilling Company (BDC) released Generations Gin in 2016 and in doing so reignited the journey to once again put Barossa on the map as a region producing exceptional craft spirits.
Generations Gin uses premium Barossa grape spirit as it base. Local business Tarac Technologies produces the spirit from grape marc recycled from wineries. It is infused and distilled with 12 botanicals. Traditional juniper and South Australian Orange are joined by coriander seed and angelica. Ginger, fennel seed and almond add warmth, structure and a robust mouthfeel, while chamomile, cassia and lavender provide savory floral notes. The South Australian oranges provide the key vibrant citrus.
“We all knew what we loved, but the hard part was absolutely nailing the recipe. We got there in the end. It’s a bloody good gin, we’re really happy with it.”
The beauty of gin is there is a wide spectrum of seasonal botanicals to choose from to make different styles. It’s a learning experience and at Barossa Distilling we are building our knowledge one glass at a time. We are always experimenting and if it meets the grade we will release it.
